Product Description

Ahh, baby has finally fallen asleep. Time to do the dishes/eat dinner/go to sleep…but wait! Is that the baby waking up? Is she coughing? Is she breathing?

Every new parent (and one or two veteran ones, too) knows this scenario. It’s lovely when your baby sleeps, but it sure would be nice to keep an eye on her, too. But there aren’t too many parents around who have the luxury of sitting quietly in baby’s bedroom, watching her sleep. This is why baby monitors were invented. And traditional audio monitors are a terrific boon to modern parents. But the Day and Night Handheld Color Video Monitor—now here is technology at its finest!

Turn On, Tune In, and Stay Out of Baby’s Room
With this slick little monitor, not only can you hear your little angel’s every breath and snuffle and rustle, but you can see her every move, too! From anywhere in the house, no less! Sound lights visually show baby’s level of activity, while nighttime LED lights on the camera make the baby fully visible day and night. Simply push one button on the parent unit to take a peek, then push the same button when you’re reassured enough to rely on the sound lights for a while. With a 350-foot range, you can carry the monitor receiver everywhere you go, even into the yard. And, most importantly, you won’t be tempted to poke your head in through that creaky bedroom door you keep meaning to fix just for a quick look at your little tot—which inevitably results in her waking and needing to go through the whole bedtime rigmarole again.

Techy Details
The 1.8-inch screen is plenty big enough to see what you need to see: your little darling’s slumbering form in full color (during daylight hours) or black-and-white (the automatic nighttime view). The parent unit includes 900 MHz technology for superior clarity of sound. If static occurs, switch channels on the two-channel selection to minimize interference. Two power options—rechargeable battery or A/C—provide parents with the freedom to roam or stay put. The rechargeable battery lasts up to 10 hours, making it a good choice for travel. The parent unit also includes an audio/video output jack and is headphone-ready (headphones not included). Brightness control and volume control features allow parents to tone it down or turn it up when necessary. Screen automatically "times out" to save batteries. "Power on" indicator lets parents know, well, when the unit’s on! Baby’s unit includes A/C-powered camera, nighttime LED lights for viewing baby in a darkened room, self-filtering directional microphone, two-channel selection to minimize interference, and "power on" indicator.

And You Put It…?
Baby’s unit provides tabletop or wall-mounted options. A belt clip and stand on the parent unit allows complete portability, while an anchor and security clips (6 included) enables parent to mount the receiver on the wall. --Emilie Coulter

Excellent Multi-purpose Monitor

Review Date: August 14, 2006

We are expectant parents and purchased this monitor for our nursery from a local store after carefully reviewing the return policy. We purchased the one with the silver faceplate which seems to be the newer improved model on the market. When we got it home, we ripped it out of the box and decided to test it rigorously, and we made our two dogs our test subjects. Also, we live in an older house, so we expected issues with electrical interference. Here are our findings:

1. We were able to see our entire kitchen both in light and in the dark although the picture was somewhat grainy in the dark. We could see our dog's eyes and teeth from a distance of about 15 feet away from the camera in both conditions.
2. We took the receiver all over the house, used it in our home office, next to our refrigerator, by our cordless phone while in use, and the reception was great with occasional static pops.
3. We were able to take the receiver outside about 20 feet around the perimiter of the house with no interference.
4. We conducted similar tests placing the camera unit in other areas of our house and had no problems.
5. Sound quality is astounding, my husband could hear me talking on the phone in another room and could hear my breathing sounds between my verbal responses on the phone.

We have had this camera for about two months now and are confident it will be of great value when our baby gets here. We had one dog that kept pottying in front of our fridge and we busted him with this camera. So overall, for the money, it is a great value and can serve many different purposes. I would highly recommend it to anyone with babies, pets, elderly or disabled persons to care for. We are very happy with this purchase.

EDIT, July 2008:
This product is STILL working great for us two years later! We lost the AC adapter to the handset while we were on vacation and we ordered a replacement from the manufacturer-they did not charge shipping and we got it within a week of ordering. I am pleased with the support given for this product as well as the product's performance. Again, I highly recommend!
Best thing I own right now for my girl

We have a 3 month old right now. She was colic and had to sleep in our bed for the past 9 weeks. We now have her in her crib. I can put the handheld part next to my bed and watch her at night. What is really great is that at night when you hear noises that sound like she is waking...you can look at her on the screen and see..nope she is still asleep! We take it out to our hottub and can watch her too.
The color isn't too great on it but it is great anyway.
The only thing I wish is that the screen wouldn't get too hot while it stayed on and when it is running on batteries that the you could get the screen to constantly stay on.
I wish I could also buy another handheld too to keep in another part of the house.
Awesome!

We just exchanged the Safety First Video monitor for this one. It's not that the other monitor was a bad one, it's just that this one suits us so much better. I like the fact that the receiver is compact and contains the video picture as well as being portable and having rechargeable batteries. The ability to hook it up to your TV (with a simple plug in cord) is a really neat option too! The camera with this unit has a wider range of adjustability than the Safety First model too, which works much better for us with the location of the high shelves in his room. I would definitely recommend this monitor! It brings peace of mind knowing that your child isn't trying to climb out of the crib!!
Excellent Reception and Clarity!!!!

My husband and I received this as a shower gift and after trying all the other video monitors out there, this was the ONLY monitor that gave us a CRYSTAL CLEAR picture! We tried the Mobi Cam which got good reviews for clarity in a "wired" household but we were suprised and disappointed with all the interference and static we saw on the monitor (even from 10 ft. away). We were amazed that this Summer system was cheaper and provided better quality out of all the ones we tested (Safety 1st and Mobi Cam). Highly recommended, especially if you have a "techie" household :)
This is THE monitor!

I always read these reviews before making a purchase. They always help me make the best choice but I have never written one myself. This warrants a rating in my opinion. And here is why:

I orginally had the Safety First Video Monitor but I did not like it at all. When I would be on the phone, cell phone or cordless, the interferance was so bad that I could see nothing but static on the screen. I use the time when my son naps to catch up on phone calls. There is NO interferance with this monitor.

The Safety First system had a very large monitor. It was not portable and gave off too much light at night. This is handheld and has great range. PLUS, it has a recharable battery. Now, I don't know about all of you, but to me, this feature is profoundly attractive considering between the swing, bouncer and all the other gadgets and guizmos, I should buy stock in Energizer.

I know some mentioned that the monitor was a bit small, and this is true. However, I find that it is not a problem for me at all and the picture quality is great. I can see my little man in his crib and tell if the noise he is making is just him stirring in his sleep or if he truly needs me. I can also hear him breathing over the monitor. Which puts me at ease.

Also, some mentioned that the monitor would get a bit of static from time to time but if you repositioned the handheld unit, it would cease. I have encountered this, but it is so easily remedied that it is not even an issue for me.

I purchased the Buyer Protection Plan from Babies R Us which cost me $24.99 and covers the unit for one year. If anything happens to it I will be sent a check for $160.00. $25 insurance for a fairly pricey item seemed a good investment for me.

If you are a new parent, I highly recommend this item. I don't know that my son and I would do as well if I couldn't actually see him while he was sleeping without having to go in his room. (Picture actually seeing your baby's chest rising and falling and knowing he his breathing.) This item is a bit expenisive, but I truly believe it is worth every penny.

I hope this helps!

LOVE this monitor!

I have never reviewed a product before but I had to comment on this one. I registered for A LOT of items when I was pregnant - including 3 different kinds of monitors. We received them all and this was by far our favorite - we returned the other two. We have a large house and are able to see a great picture of our baby whether it's day or night regardless of where we are in the house. The night vision is great - a little creepy when the baby's eyes are open and staring straight at the camera in the dark. You can hear every sound he makes and are able to see whether he's waking or just turning in his sleep. We even took the monitor with us to visit our in-laws in Florida - we were able to sit by the pool outside while he slept soundly in a room upstairs. The handheld monitor is fantastic - stays charged for a long time. The camera - while it needs to be plugged in, comes with a VERY long cord (unlike a lot of other baby products that need to be plugged in) so you don't need to rearrange your nursery or get extension to be able to set up the camera nearthe crib. Love it, love it, love it. Our baby is now 5 months old and in my relatively new experience, when it comes to baby items, this is definitely one of my top 5 favorite and most often used.
Great product--worth the extra $$

I also didn't think a video monitor would be necessary, but my husband--a gadget guy--wanted one, so we 1st got the Sight & Sound Assurance by Safety 1st. The monitor on the Safety 1st was always B&W and pretty grainy, also the monitor is very bulky and always has to be plugged in.

As soon as we plugged in this Summer Infant monitor we were both amazed at the picture quality. It is very clear even at night and you can adjust the brightness of the picture to your liking. It picks up sound extremely well too. Also--for those of you with a wireless network we have had no problems. Love that you can see the video with volume all the way down and that the video turns off after a few seconds (button on top turns it back on instantly)

ONLY NEGATIVE--a little bit of background static--my husband didn't notice it.

(BTW--someone was complaining about the picture being B & W at night--EVERY monitor system would be B & W at night, because there is NO such thing as color in the absence of light!)
Hesitated at the price, but turns out it's one of my best baby purchases

I have a particularly wiggly baby who has hummed and talked to himself in his sleep since birth. Instead of buying a regular sound monitor, I looked into video monitors so I didn't have to check on him every time he made noises and wiggled around. The first day I used it, I found it to be worth its weight in gold because of the worry-free spare time it gave me.

Product info says it may interfere with some cordless phones etc, but you can either switch the channel on the monitor, or you can switch the channel on your phone. It also said it might produce feedback if the handheld monitor is situated too near the camera, but I can place them next to each other without any feedback at all.

I use it cordlessly a lot during the day, sometimes for a few hours at a stretch, and I've never had the battery run out on me. When it is being used cordlessly, the video shuts itself off automatically after a few mins (the sound and the sound-light indicator do not shut off) and you can just hit the button on top to check your baby periodically. I simply plug it back in when my little one wakes up and it charges itself up for next time.

Other reviews I've seen state the color on the monitor is not good quality, and yes sometimes it's not great, but I've never worried about that. This little unit does its job. I've had the unit for four months now, daily use, dropped it pretty badly once, with no prob so far. Love it.
