Amazon.com Review:
Sterilize six baby bottles in just two minutes: imagine what our grandparents would say! The Avent Express II Microwave Sterilizer is a modern-day technological wonder…and a joy for most parents, who will do anything for a little peace of mind and a few extra minutes to spare. Using a regular kitchen microwave, this lightweight sterilizer eliminates household bacteria and keeps contents sterile for up to 24 hours. It can be used to sterilize Avent feeding bottles of varying sizes (and their nipples, rings, and dome caps), Avent Isis breast pump accessories, Via cups and lids, Via Disposable Nursers, and other non-electrical Avent products. Its compact size and ease of use make the sterilizer perfect for traveling, too.

Protect Your Baby from Bacteria
The Avent Express II Microwave Sterilizer effectively and quickly kills the kind of household bacteria that can wreak havoc on babies’ delicate new systems. Establishing a routine of washing bottles and pump supplies in gentle, soapy water, then sterilizing them, will ensure that baby will have a clean start in life.

No More Pots and Pans and Boiling Water
The Avent Express is simplicity itself once you get the hang of it. After reading the detailed instructions with great care (assembly and loading are not completely intuitive, and there are important details that can make all the difference in safety and effectiveness of the sterilizer), pour the correct amount of water into the base. Load the pre-washed bottles and feeding components into the appropriate spots in the plastic rack, position the lid over the sterilizer base and lock the clips into place. (You’ll hear a click.) Place the sterilizer in the center of the microwave, and select microwave wattage and timings (a chart is included to determine proper wattage and time). Allow the unit to cool for at least two minutes before removing the sterilizer from the microwave. Use the safety grips on the base—they stay cooler to ensure safer handling. If you don’t remove the lid, the contents will stay sterile for up to 24 hours.

Care and Cleaning
The all-plastic sterilizer is dishwasher safe. Always drain the excess water from the unit and rinse to prevent the build-up of limescale. Always store when the unit is completely dry.

What’s in the Box
The Avent Express II Microwave Sterilizer consists of a sturdy plastic base (11 inches in diameter) with safety grips; a bottle/accessory rack with dome cap stem, bottle cavity, nipple cavity, and Isis Breast Pump slots; and a lid with locking clips. It can be used with most standard microwaves with wattage range from 500 to 1,850 watts. The box also contains two nine-ounce Avent bottles with their rings, nipples, and dome caps, as well as a detailed and illustrated instruction manual.

Note: When taking the sterilizer out of the microwave, use great caution! It will still be hot, as will be the contents. When removing the lid, point it away from you to allow the steam to escape. Follow loading, assembling, and care instructions meticulously. --Emilie Coulter

Highly recommended!
We chose to use Avent bottles because Avent promised an attractively priced anti-colic, BPA-free system. My daughter was two months premature, so sterilizing her bottles and my pumping equipment was a must.

We began by washing bottles and nipples in the sterilize unit of our dishwasher, but that proved to be a major pain. My husband hunted around and found the Avent self-contained sterilizer at a local baby store. It was pricey, but we gulped and bought it, thinking it would be better than this less expensive microwave version.

Boy, were we wrong! The self-contained unit turned toes-up after only a month and before that, kept oozing brown water at the bottom of the unit. Fortunately, we were able to return it.

We decided to give this sterilizer a shot. Are we ever glad we did. Our only regret is that we didn't buy it first.

It's quicker than the self-contained unit, less expensive, easier to clean and easier to use. We absolutely love it. The only and ONLY possible problem with this item is that you can't put the l1 oz Avent bottles in there -- at least not standing up. However, we're just using the 4 and 9 oz sizes, so that poses no problem for us as of now.

If you're using the Avent system, definitely get this product. Thumb's up!

Great product for a working, pumping mom!
I have to pump milk for my daughter at my office, and getting my pump parts clean was challenging. Our sink doesn't put out enough got water for me to feel that my parts were really clean and safe. Now, I wash the parts and then put them through a steam sterilization in the office microwave, and I pump with the confidence that I'm not adding harmful bacteria to my breastmilk. It also serves as a nice place to store my pump parts at the office, where I know they will remain clean and untouched.

Met all expectations!
I brought this item to Prague for use with our new grandson. It was found to be convenient and efficient.

Great product but 12 oz bottles does not fit
This is a great product, unfortunately, after my son moved to 12 oz bottles, I realized that I cannot fit them in this sterilizer. Other than that, it's really easy to use, a great life saver. It would've been a nightmare to boil the bottles to disinfect them. Just be careful with some pacifier parts. One of my baby's pacifier holder attachment ended up melting during sterilizing. Not everything is meant to be in this sterilizer.

Affordable sterilizer created in partnership by Philips and Avent
MODEL SELECTION:

There are two microwave sterilizer models marketed by Philips/Avent. The first is the SCF271/07 (ASIN B001C3KXPG) and the second is the SCF271/02 (ASIN B000056OUH). BOTH actually contain the basic Express II Microwave Steam Sterilizer which holds up to six (6) bottles or a combination of other items including microwaveable breast pumps, cups, etc.

The only difference is that the SCF271/02 contains an ADDITIONAL two (2) of the 9oz/260ml Airflex Natural Feeding Bottle and Nippple.

Strangely enough as of this writing, Amazon is selling the SCF271/02 (the one that contains two extra feeding bottles) for a much lower price than the SCF271/07. So until prices remain like this, know what you are buying and consider it a bonus to have the two extra bottles.

TO STERILIZE OR NOT TO STERILIZE...WITH THIS MICROWAVE STERILIZER:

The argument is not whether you should sterilize your baby products (or expose the baby to germs as argument in strengthening the immune system) because if you're searching for a sterilizer and reached this page, then I'm going to assume you agree with the sterilization process.

The other argument in question is whether you are content with using hot running water and anti-bacterial soap or running a dishwasher and if these steps alone are enough to sterilize. Well it doesn't help to take an extra step to go thru a short few minutes in the microwave. Again, if you're in this page then you've come to accept that this sterilization process is worth the extra caution.

HOW MANY MINUTES IN THE MICROWAVE AT FULL POWER AND 200ml OF WATER?

2 MINUTES @ 1,100 - 1,850W, 2 MINUTES COOLDOWN
4 MINUTES @ 850 - 1,000W, 2 MINUTES COOLDOWN
6 MINUTES @ 500 - 800W, 2 MINUTES COOLDOWN

I'm restating these from the manual because it's important to ensure proper use. Too little water and you can end up damaging the sterilizer. Too much water and you fail to properly sterilize.

Check to see the wattage of your microwave. The model number is usually a giveaway on this.

How much is 200ml? Your baby bottle should give you that info.

Also remember to allow 2 minutes cooling time prior to unlocking the lid unless you want to be greeted with hot steam on your face and second degree burn or worse.

HOW LONG WILL IT REMAIN STERILE?

The manual further states that the items will remain sterile for 24 hours PROVIDED THE LID IS NOT REMOVED. So yes you can sterilize in advance and leave it inside until you need it for the day.

COMMENTS:

Avent and Philips have consistently provided quality plastic products. The look and feel is what I have come to expect. It is well made and there are no rough edges or protruding plastic parts that may have not been molded properly.

The manual will tell you how to position the items in the sterilizer versus simply dumping them in. The point of the sterilizer is to allow hot steam to circulate around. So incorrect position may mean not creating a good sterilization process.

When all is said and done, this is a simple sterilizer you put in the microwave. For the low cost it is offered, it's a small price to pay for extra security for your baby. Follow the included instructions and enjoy.

The Philips Avent Express Microwave Sterilizer works for most of the baby bottles, pacifiers, breast pump attachments, teething toys and any other baby accessories that can be sterilized with steam. Likewise, it is very easy to use. Just rinse out the bottles or other baby feeding accessories, pour in the water, turn on the microwave for a specified time, let it cool down, and viola you’ve got your baby stuff ready to use. You can also let it operate at night and take your usual sleeping schedule without worrying about staying up to watch the stuff on the stove.
